Join our virtual meeting, Thu 6 July 12.30pm, on our 2 Calls for expertise. DfT-led UAS/EVTOL Strategic Roadmap.

Join us for a briefing on the background on our calls for expertise via a virtual meeting on zoom this Thursday. Click HERE to register via eventbrite.

The Department for Transport is coordinating a high level group, co-chaired with Duncan Walker of Skyports, that includes high level representatives of Gov’t, DFT, CAA, and Industry, including ARPAS-UK.

The objective is to converge on a UK UAS and e-VTOL roadmap, and associated CAA roadmaps. This is a unique opportunity to shape the direction and speed of our industry’s evolution. The 2 main areas of focus are:

  1. The evolution of the Specific Category combined with the airspace integration strategy, encapsulated in the strategic outcome of: “Routine UAS BVLOS operations at scale in airspace shared with other users”
  2. The emergence of Advanced Air Mobility, encapsulated in the strategic outcome of “ Routine Piloted eVTOL Flight Operations”, followed by “Initial remotely piloted/autonomous VTOL operations”.

The group is not public and no official communication is made at this stage. We will respect that status. However, detailed input beyond the general vision is required now so that the first draft reflects market needs and is backed by expertise on the ground. First workshops are being set up in the first half of July to discuss specific sub-topics.

We are keen to engage with membership, with a view to provide the best input to the group, meaning educated positions and expertise that help the authorities’ understanding and help the industry as a whole move forward.

UK Police to create a Centre of Excellence for Public Safety Drone Operations

The National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) Drones portfolio want UK police forces to be at the leading edge of public safety drone operations. To support this ambition they will develop a Centre of Excellence.

It will align drone training and procedures to a national standard that puts the safety of people on the ground and other airspace users first and enhances operational effectiveness. An Authorised Professional Practice (APP) will provide police drone pilots and senior officers with guidelines that ensure the maximum benefits are gained from drones in support of policing, while templates for Operational Authorisations will help local forces deliver the drone support their frontline officers need.

As they develop our Centre of Excellence they will work collaboratively with other public safety entities around the world to share best practice and enhance their capabilities.

ARPAS-UK to partner with Brightside on Future Flight Mentoring Project

ARPAS-UK is excited to partner with social mobility charity Brightside to support young people facing barriers. Together, they’ll provide insight into the world of aviation through high-impact online mentoring to young people. The project is being delivered through the Future Flight Challenge to address the skills gap within the aviation sector.

The £300 million Future Flight Challenge was created by the UK Government to support the challenges that aviation has coming, with particular focus on electric, hydrogen and autonomous air vehicles. This is the third revolution in aviation.

Brightside’s mission is to help young people from under-represented backgrounds to make confident and informed decisions about their future. They do this by connecting them with an inspiring mentor online, through their fully safeguarded platform and app, where they can ask questions, get feedback and share links and resources.

ARPAS-UK is the non-profit trade association for the UK drone industry. They engage with a broad range of stakeholders, from Government to Regulators, other industries’ Professional and Trade Bodies to promote the use of drones within the UK to Industry as well as the General Public, ensuring drone use is safe and compliant. The Association is run by the members.

Brightside and ARPAS-UK will run a mentoring project starting in autumn 2023. Mentors who work across the sector will be matched with mentees to inspire the next generation and encourage them to take up the challenges that face the UK’s aviation future. In 2022, 77% of Brightside mentees said that mentoring influenced their decisions about what to do next.

Brightside COO Rachel Pigott said,

“We’re thrilled to be a partnering with ARPAS-UK as part of the Future Flight Challenge: Closing the Skills Gap. We will be using online mentoring to provide young people across the UK with a direct insight into this exciting and evolving sector and we can’t wait to see the impact.”

Online mentoring is a flexible volunteering opportunity, as mentors dedicate just one hour a week to support young people. All mentors receive training and complete a DBS check (organised by Brightside). If you’re interested in sharing your knowledge of the Future Flight and drone sector and making a huge difference to the life of a young person, sign up to become a mentor by emailing Elena Major, elena.major@arpas.uk, Operations Manager at ARPAS-UK
