Great engagement at DroneX 2024 – ARPAS-UK’s Debrief

What a show! The quality of conversations at DroneX 2024 was high with what felt like more attendees than in previous years. We certainly barely stopped, to the extent that the only photo we took of the team at the show was taken at the end of the two days and after we’d packed up!

That includes our new member of staff, Annabel, who was thrown in at the deep end somewhat, having only joined us two weeks ago. However, her background in ROV-supported subsea inspection in the oil and gas industry combined with her natural curiosity about the drone industry are already proving that she will be an asset to ARPAS-UK and our membership. Welcome on board, Annabel!

ARPAS-UK taking part in CAA and DFT Panel

Highlights included the panel discussion moderated by Amanda Smith, Sellafield, with Sophie O’Sullivan, CAA, Vickie Murdy, UKRI, Anne-Lise Scaillierez, ARPAS-UK, and Louisa Smith, Apian, on “Unlocking Drones for UK industry: what can innovators, the regulator and government do to help?”. There was more audience than chairs in the theatre! Anne-Lise had the challenging task of sharing industry concerns

Our Keynote Presentation

Graham Brown, Chair, and Anne-Lise Scaillierez, CEO delivered a keynote address on industry updates and ARPAS-UK activities to support the industry. Their presentation can be accessed in this password protected post – MEMBERS ONLY

Part of the Jury for the AAM Innovation Award

Finally, Anne-Lise had the honour to be a judge together with Nicola Ridd, DfT, and Gary Smith, CAA, for the DroneX Advanced Air Mobility AAM Award. The jury delivered the AAM Award to Inteliports.

Post DroneX Summary

What a show DroneX Tradeshow & Conference was this year.

I’ve never had a show where the only break over the two days was 20 minutes due to how busy we were. It was great to see so many current members, returning members, new members and meet others with whom to collaborate to take the industry forwards. Thank you to everyone for their patience in waiting to speak to us.

We also had the wonderful Faltrego team filming for the mentoring project of young people that we’re part of this autumn in conjunction with Brightside, a charity with 20 years experience of running mentoring projects. This project will be brilliant if the quality of the mentors is anything to go by! David WaltersKarl EzeDeborah Saban-Eppel

There was huge interest in the BVLOS Risk Quantification course as well. The UK is going to have some extremely highly skilled UAS operators ready for BVLOS. Via the BVLOS Technical Special Interest Group and feeding into the NATS BVLOS Forum, we’ll keep working on the issues and practicalities at industry level.

Add to that, the interest in our CPD webinars, the guided tours of the show and the standing room only presentation that Anne-Lise Scaillierez & Graham Brown in conjunction with Frost & Sullivan & PwC UK gave on the Latest Market Outlook, and I can confidently say that was definitely a good event.

2023 Update and Latest Market Outlook

Key Note Theatre: 27 Sept 2023 at 2pm

2023 is a busy year, and we expect the same in 2024: Join us to review key regulatory and industry engagement updates.

We will also welcome our members, PwC with Craig Roberts, Head of Drones, and Frost & Sullivan with Michael Rowe, VP Global Aerospace. They will share highlights of their latest industry reports on the perception of drones and the Advanced Air Mobility AAM market opportunity.

ARPAS UK are proud to announce for the third year running to be the official headline partner for DroneX Tradeshow & Conference which will be taking place on the 26th & 27th September at the ExCeL London.

The successful delivery of the 2022 edition led to DroneX being nominated for an industry award by Exhibition News which recognises exhibitions that are breaking boundaries against longer running trade shows! Additionally, the show has also gained a reputation as Europe’s leading business event dedicated to the UAV industry and we are proud to be supporting the team once again for another successful edition!

DroneX is the central platform for the industry ecosystem to enhance conversations that will drive change and act as a voice to push the industry forward to achieve the goals of a safer, more sustainable integrated airspace. The show highlighted the importance of the future of the airspace and played an integral role in signifying the impact that urban air mobility has on the industry. With keynote sessions from thought-leaders such as David Stepanek from Bristow discussing the early adoption of advanced air mobility, followed by other key players including Lilium, Rolls-Royce Electrical, Ehang, NATS, CAA and the Minister of Aviation. It was clear that the demand was to ensure the future of air mobility can benefit from a platform to further connect the ecosystem.

Advanced Air Mobility Expo will allow those within the industry that had a preview from our previous edition its very own hub to source the latest advancements, engage and network with industry professionals and gain insight into the growing market. The show will see the launch of AAM connect, a dedicated networking space, 100 expert-led seminars and over 300 hand-picked exhibitors. In addition, an opportunity to take advantage of over 50 hours of unmissable content from leading experts and keynote speakers, all covering the key aspects of Public acceptance, Sustainability, Infrastructure, Vehicle Development, Traffic and Operations and Safety/ Regulations.

With that said, the Advanced Air Mobility Expo will be taking place next door to the
DroneX Tradeshow & Conference and Helitech Expo on the 26th & 27th September at
the ExCeL London and promises to continue its goals of becoming the leading business
event for the future and integration of airspace.

DroneX: a round up, thoughts and preparing next year

7-8 Sep 2022, London

We were delighted to meet so many members and key stakeholders, and to share our stand with a few members as well: Richard Gill of Drone Defence, Toby Townrow of Dronevolution and Chris Crockford of Electric Aviation. It was fantastic to see the interaction between them and other exhibitors and visitors, as well as being able to introduce a number of people to them.

This was the 2nd year of the UK’s only commercial UAV show, and focussed on The Future of Flight, Military & Defence, Emergency Services and the Commercial Sector.

With over 300 exhibitors and presentations, and positioned alongside Helitech, there was a wide variety of options for the visitor. Talks ranged from the Civil Aviation’s Mark Wharry on The Regulator’s Perspective (see our separate article on this keynote), PwC’s Craig Roberts on The Economic Impact of Drones on the UK Economy, to Inmarsat’s panel on Drone Deliveries: For the Good of our Health were fascinating, Thales’s Neil Watson on Accelerating the Adoption of Drone Services at Scale in the UK and Fraser Nash & The Thunderbird Project’s Stuart Keenan & Alan Bell on Priority Access to the Skies for Emergency Life-Saving Drones

Now-Chair of ARPAS-UK, Graham Brown, spoke alongside Gordon Baker, the DfT’s Autonomous Systems Lead on Achieving the UK’s Drone Ambition and Some Steps to Achieve the Potential. If you would like a copy of this, please contact us

There was a definite feel that the industry has become more well established, more mature and that it is being listened to by serious people. Where does the Show need to go from this solid position?

There are two complementary routes: one is to attract even more drone data end-users, i.e. industries using drones, to show how drones can help them deliver faster, safer, cheaper and more digital operations; the other is to attract (back?) the drone operators, for example by building on their professionalism via CPD sessions at the show. Sessions on different types of software, how to apply for an OSC, marketing your company, the importance of networking, the ins & outs of different types of work, how to go about finding work and how to apply for big contracts etc.

The team supporting DroneX have been very enthusiastic and supportive of the industry. They know our thoughts and we hope we will see this now being acted on.

If you would like to share your thoughts on how DroneX could evolve, please contact us [email protected].

Exhibiting at DroneX 2023: 26-27 September 2023, London

  1. This is an opportunity to exhibit at the show for a vastly reduced cost. If you’re interested in doing so next year, get in touch with the Operations Team via [email protected]
  2. ARPAS-UK was also delighted to be able to offer a 20% discount on exhibiting to our members. We know of a couple who weren’t able to take advantage of this offer, having already booked their stand before becoming aware of it. Please remember to read our emails! We can confirm that we can offer members a 20% discount on next year.

Advantages of Exhibiting & Speaking at Trade Shows & Conferences

Exhibiting at trade shows can bring benefits to your business. You can meet directly with potential customers and generate leads. However, success is not guaranteed and there are costs involved. Such advantages include:

The Benefits of Exhibiting include:

  • Raise awareness – exhibiting at industry events is a good way to raise your profiles and generate brand awareness. As well as taking a stand at an event, there are usually other advertising and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Meet in person – meeting face-to-face with potential customers is a great way to start building relationships.
  • Networking – trade shows are a great way to meet potential new customers, suppliers and to learn more about your competitors.
  • Launch new product – trade shows are a good place to introduce a new product or service. Being able to explain your offering in person and answer questions is ideal if your product is innovative.
  • Build your database – meeting with potential customers at an exhibition helps you to start building your marketing lists and generate qualified sales leads.

The Benefits of Speaking – For You

  • Speaking at a conference shows your expertise and commitment to the drone industry, which is attractive to prospective employers;
  • This is an opportunity to challenge yourself by public speaking (as this is a really important skill for your career in any sector) and get constructive feedback on how to get better;
  • Put this activity on your LinkedIn profile and CV to position yourself for promotions and job applications;
  • Represent an under-represented group by being a high-profile speaker. We need more diversity in our world and you can be the change you want to see;
  • An opportunity to Network face to face with other professionals, other speakers and stakeholders.

And For Your Organisation

  • Speakers receive free passes to attend so they will bring back best practice and lessons learnt to benefit your organisation and other staff on their return to the office
  • Organisations that put forward speakers outwardly demonstrate their commitment to learning/best practice. Speakers regularly use the experience to evidence professional development and organisations use the opportunity to provide evidence for accreditation schemes including Investors for People.
  • Organisations that send speakers can show their clients that they are conducting ‘gold standard’ focused activity – success stories always make great PR!

If you are interested in exhibiting at events or speaking, please get in touch via [email protected]
